Employer Liability for Summer Outings

Are you planning a summer staff outing offering alcoholic beverages? If so, be sure to clearly communicate the company’s expectations as to how employees are expected to behave at the event. Our recommendation is to limit the number of drinks per person. Another option is to designate a member(s) of management to abstain from drinking so they can monitor the event and put a stop to any activity that could lead to a potential liability issue. This will prevent potential claims resulting from employees drinking and driving. An employer or HR should also be prepared to address any incidents and issue a corrective action once employees return to the workplace.
