Ensure Time Off is Taken with Auto-Deducted Meal Breaks

Establishing an auto-deduct time policy for non-exempt employees’ meal plans can help employers track break time, if implemented according to best practices. The employer should provide an option to cancel or formally report if the employee works during his or her meal break. The employer should also avoid interruptions during these breaks and ensure that employees and management are trained on how to properly comply with the policy and wage and hour law. An auto-deduction policy can limit the cost resulting from an employee forgetting to clock out or back in for a meal break, potentially decreasing labor costs, but must be managed carefully.
