HR Tip of the Week: The Case for Unlimited PTO
According to a 2019 employee benefits survey from the Society for Human Resources Management, only 6% of companies offer unlimited PTO, however, that figure could grow as companies continue to compete for top talent. Companies that employ Unlimited PTO say that it boosts morale and productivity, remains a strong attractant to desirable candidates, and reduces issues employers often face with paying out vacation time upon termination.
However, there is a downside. Employers must consider how the policy would interact with FMLA and COBRA, and navigate the differences in employees’ and employers’ real expectations of adequate or acceptable time taken.
